Rating system questions Posted by Texas_Gary Sep 25 2006 11:06AM Another newbie inquiry . . . how does the rating system work? What formula takes the two players' ratings, the outcome, and then determines the new ratings? Is there something on the site that explains this? Thanks, Gary Player Ratings Posted by webmaster (moderator) Sep 25 2006 11:41AM Ratings adhere to standard published ELO formulas used by USCF (United States Chess Federation) & other sports federations. Ratings depend on many factors: * the initial ratings of both opponents (always) * the result (always) * how many games both opponents have played (in the case when one or both of the opponents played fewer than 20 games) Those who played fewer than 20 games are rated provisionally. These players are helped [via separate but standard ELO formula] to ramp up their rating faster. That also means that if they lose, their rating may not go down or your rating may no go up in case you win |
